Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology Department (NND) was established in 2003 after reconstruction of CMRDI divisions with an ultimate objective to carry out focused research on cutting edge areas in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The NND also houses sponsored research projects from various funding agencies and to keep pace with national and global streams of development. The NND has installed highly sophisticated instruments which are essential for nanoresearch and are fully equipped with facilities for carrying top quality research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Additionally, the NND is committed to make use of the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology for the welfare of the society and betterment of the environment.




Our vision is to provide and achieve pioneering innovations for developing technologies through research, partnership and consultancy in multidisciplinary Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and their applications. Establishing bridges and linkages with experienced academic researchers, experts locally and internationally collaborations, industry experts and national laboratories to create cutting edge technologies.


Our mission is to become a hub of applied sciences and engineering research activities at the emerging interfaces of Nanoscience, Nanotechnology, water purification, energy, environment, climate change and biotechnology focusing on the production and application of advanced materials. We strive to solve some of the long standing and fundamentally important problems of previous goals using cutting edge tools. The ultimate goal is to develop sustainable solutions that are commercialisable and to train and educate post-graduate students to become the next generation experts in the field of Nanotechnology. Also, to conduct and support research, development, design and engineering in Nanotechnology, and transfer the technology to industrial sector in order to increase competitiveness, innovative products for societal benefits and improve the quality of life and the environment.


  • To conduct R&D in order to acquire advanced knowledge in nanoscience and nanotechnology at international level, at the same time, build awareness to society and environment.
  • To identify and update relevant knowledge gaps and prioritize needs through active stakeholder engagement, including industry and government
  • To develop interdisciplinary culture for research in Nano-science and to transfer the knowledge and know-how in nanoscience and nanotechnology to the industrial sector.
  • To drive strategies and policies for nanoscience and nanotechnology in ways that yield concrete and sustainable results.
