The department contains different capabilities of macro- and microscopes in addition to the metallographic preparation facilities. The research team in the department has achieved many industrial research funded projects and consultants. One of the projects was funded by the National Authorization for Military Products for processing armor High Strength Steel (HSS) plates with thickness 6 mm, 1500 mm width and 6 m length at the military factory 100. The processed plates satisfied all the required mechanical properties. Furthermore, shooting was performed against the steel plates with two types of bullets. Normal bullets (7.62x51) and aperture bullets (5.56x45) were used in the ballistic tests. The plates withstand successfully shooting with both bullets calipers.
A universal cupping testing machine is recently joined to the plastic deformation department. This facility is a multi-functional cold forming testing machine for flat shape alloys. The machine can carry out tests on sheets up to 6.0 mm thickness. It has the possibility for testing at high temperature up to 600 oC. The tests are ranging between Erichsen indention tests and round and rectangle cupping tests. The machine is provided with precise control on the blank holder, punch speed. The punch force and stroke are precisely provided for each 0.01 sec. of the test. Usually, the punch force simulates the strain hardening behavior of material during cold deformation of sheets.
Our vision is to provide Excellence and leading engineering solutions in Metal Forming design and production, emphasizing Metallurgical and Materials Engineering nationally, regionally, and internationally to better serve individuals, society, and the environment.
Our mission is to provide solutions and develop applications in metal forming through industrial collaboration, drawing on knowledge and experience using available resources.
Deformation Department are numerous. One of the targets is to produce special kinds of steel by thermomechanical processing such as Bainitic Steel (bullet proof) or TRIP Steel using Thermomechanical Processing. Another is to enhance the mechanical properties of Al-Si Alloy using the Friction Stir Processing. Another goal was achieved is producing nano-structured Al using the Accumulative Roll Bonding and annealing process.
