CMRDI awarded five new Projects from STDF PDF Print E-mail

Under the umbrella of Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF) program and USA cooperation projects, CMRDI was awarded grants for the following applied research projects.

First project entitled “Preparation of Nano-fillers from Waste Materials and their Application in Papermaking Industry” . This research project will focus on preparing paper fillers from industrial waste to reduce the cost of fillers and paper.  It will also focus on preparation of the fillers with nanostructured (size, aspect ratio, shape, morphology of calcium carbonate,   nano- silica and nano-silica calcium carbonate composite) by mathematical model to avoid their reverse effect in reducing the paper strength and to reduce their abrasiveness.

Training course in X-Ray Diffraction and X- Ray Fluorescence and their Applications PDF Print E-mail

Based on the agreement concluded between the quality  training center for manufacturing cement and construction materials in Libya with Central Metallurgical R & D Institute (CMRDI) in Cairo, a training course for (10) workers from cement companies in Libya was implemented. It was considered as one more step in the scientific cooperation between both countries. The Training course was held under the supervision of Ore Evaluation Laboratory and the Technical Services Department in CMRDI. The course started from 4/7/2009 to 9/7/2009 and covered the theoretical and practical parts of the field of materials evaluation in cement industry. Two specialists from CMRDI traveled to Libya for a week started from 11/7/2009 to 16/7/2009 to complete the course in Libyan cement companies.

 
Improving ferric ions extraction from Egyptian ilmenite ore by liquid membrane assisted leaching PDF Print E-mail

Through activation of Bilateral Cooperation Agreement between Egypt and Italy, CNR and CMRDI have joint project entitled: Liquid Membrane Assisted Leaching of Some Natural Ores for Improving Metals Extraction with Prof. El-Sayed A. Abdel-Aal, head of Advanced Materials Department (CMRDI) and Prof. Enrico Driol, the Director of Institute on Membrane Technology at University of Calabria. The present joint project deals with the improvement of titanium dissolution from an Egyptian natural ilmenite ore. Continuous reduction or removal of the leached ferric ions into ferrous ions greatly improved the leaching behavior of ilmenite ore in hydrochloric acid. The idea behind this project is the enhancement of the ore digestion in hydrochloric acid by the continuous removal of ferric ion from the solution instead of adding a reducing agent (as iron powder) to the leaching medium. An organic solvent was suggested to play this role. Ferric ions are suggested to be extracted from the leaching pulp solution into the organic solvent during the leaching process. Ferric ions will be transported from the leach liquor into another immiscible organic phase using supported liquid membrane. The obtained results with two-stage leaching followed by 4 consecutive membrane separation stages revealed that Fe removal efficiency of about 85% was achieved. Fe content in the feed solution before and after 4 stages membrane separation are 0.42% and 0.064%, respectively. The precipitated particles of iron oxy chloride have a size of about 1 micron.

 
Egyptian - German Cooperation in The Applications of Hydroxyapatite Material as Bone Alternative PDF Print E-mail

Prof. Dr. S. A. Abdel-Aal, spent two months at Chemnitz University, Germany funded by the German Research Community (DFG). The research was conducted in the field of preparation and coating of hydroxyapatite. Because the main concern for the rule of hydroxyapatite as the main component of human bones (about 70%). This material is used in many medical areas, where they have high critical consensus is an ideal substitute for bone, especially in the parts of a more load, such as weak bones of the ear bones. In case of high load parts such as the bones of the hand or the thigh or neck bands can be replaced by a layer of titanium-coated materials as hydroxyapatite. These segments are biocompatible with human body and make a layer adherent and coherent interface between the titanium alloy and the surrounding bone tissue. Preparation was done using chemical precipitation method for the coating powder which then coated on titanium slides using plasma spraying. The study of the overlapping between the various factors affecting the coating process. The most important achievement through this collaboration work is the development of a relationship between the conditions of preparation and mechanical properties and the degree of purity of the hydroxyapatite.

 
The 8th International Welding Engineer (IWE) Course PDF Print E-mail

A cooperation program between International Institute of Welding (IIW) and CMRDI is intended to provide CMRDI as Approved training Body (ATB). On the long term this will provide Egypt with experienced, trained welders, welding coordination personnel and welding engineers for all necessary qualification levels in welding technology. Furthermore, it will open good chance for young engineers and welding technicians to have an international recognized qualification certificate.
Since 2006 CMRDI has succeed to train and qualify more than 250 International Welding Engineer (IWE) through 7 training courses, and more than 200 international certified welder according to ISO 9606. All of them had been hired immediately after the completion of the courses with aids provide by CMRDI. The 8th training course was carried out from March to June 2009 and the Qualification examination was done on 27 and 28 June 2009. The result of passed candidates was 70%. The next course will be started on coming October 2009.Also, CMRDI has signed to agreement contracts with Syria and Libya to transfer and adopt the international guidelines of education, training and qualification of welders.
